HISTORY

Imperial College of Agriculture and Forestry, Morioka was established in March, 1902 and veterinary education was initiated. Iwakichi Kani, the first professor of the department of veterinary pathology, made efforts to collect specimens from the founding of the school. A dermoid cyst of horse and a melanosarcoma of horse 9 years before the founding of school were the oldest specimens. Since then, about 2,000 specimens of industrial animals such as cattle, horse, swine, and domestic fowl have been collected for over 100 years. Companion animals such as dogs and cats were also included from the first. These specimens cover almost all important diseases in each animal species and reflect each period, including important historical specimens such as those of infectious anemia and farcy that are rarely observed in the present Japan. Prof. Kenjiro Kikuchi, who took up the post in 1911, were especially interested in pathology and parasitology and collected and arranged numerous previous specimens. The variety is still the widest in Japan. From 1953, a budget of the Ministry of Education for the maintenance of specimens was allotted to our school, which has been used for equipment with specimen bottles, renewal of fixatives, and preparation sand supplement of specimens. Specimens were collected by the successive professors, Kenjiro Kikuchi, Sadao Miura, Kan-ichi Ohshima, and Kosuke Okada but the hidden efforts of Mr. Tanaka and Mr. Numakunai, who prepared the specimens for exhibition, and students who majored veterinary pathology can not be forgotten. These precious specimens were initially stored in a room of an old wooden school building but moved to the Science Building of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in 1954, which was the only reinforced concrete building at our school at that time. In 1963, this museum of veterinary medicine was constructed. Subsequently, a heating system was installed, and some repairs such as re-covering of the floor have been performed.
