Yanagawa disease
(bracken poisoning in horse)
This name was given because this disease occurred in a stock
farm in the Yanagawa district to the east of Morioka City.
Yanagawa disease is vitamin B1 deficiency so-called "bracken
poisoning" due to ingestion of bracken that thickly grows in late
autumn in the pasturage in this district. The primary sign is paralysis
of the hindquarters, and bleeding and degeneration are observed in the
entire body especially in the peripheral nerves of the pelvic limbs and
fore limbs (register No. 5035)
