Akabane disease

This is an infectious disease in cattle due to Akabane virus causing abortion
and fetal malformations such as arthrogryposis and cerebral defects. This disease
is transmitted by blood-sucking insects such as biting gnats. Vaccination is effective.
A mass outbreak of this disease in Iwate Prefecture in 1986 (3,230 cases) caused
great damage of more than 4 hundred million yen.
